How AP Exams Are Scored

Every AP exam reports a final score from 1 to 5, built from two parts: the Multiple Choice section and the Free Response section. Each exam weights these two parts differently — for example, AP Calculus AB splits 50/50, while AP Psychology weights Multiple Choice more heavily at 66.7%.

Your raw points from each section are converted to a weighted composite score, which is then mapped onto the 1-5 scale using that year's scoring curve. The curve is set after the exam is administered and can shift slightly depending on how difficult that year's test was.
