The final-grade formula
Required exam score = (target grade − current grade × (1 − exam weight)) ÷ exam weight. Use the exam weight as a decimal: 30% is 0.30.
Example: an 80% target is within reach
With an 85% current grade and a final worth 30%, you need (80 − 85 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 68.33%. The non-final work contributes 59.5 percentage points, and the exam must supply the remaining 20.5.
What does a result above 100% mean?
With the same current grade and exam weight, a 90% target needs 101.67%. It is beyond the normal exam maximum. Extra credit or a different course policy could change this, but the calculator does not assume either.
Check how your gradebook handles missing work
Your current average must describe only the non-final portion of the course. If your gradebook already includes the final as a zero, use the average with that placeholder excluded. This model assumes the final is the only remaining component and the full course weights sum to 100%.
